A Cow Named Lila
Ganga gently runs her hand over Lila’s coarse, warm coat. The cow, her cow, looks up at her with wide, placid eyes. She leans her forehead against hers for a moment. This cow has changed everything for Ganga and her family.
High in the remote Himalayan mountains of northern India, life can be unforgiving. Ganga’s village is tucked so deep into the landscape that it feels worlds away from the towns below. Resources are scarce, and opportunities to work seem even scarcer.
Before Lila came into their lives, Ganga struggled daily to find ways to provide for her family.
Ganga’s family became one of the first recipients of a new initiative, the Economic Cow Project. Through your generosity, Ganga was entrusted with Lila, a high-yielding milk cow capable of producing up to 20 liters of milk a day.
Each morning now begins the same way. Ganga rises to tend to Lila, milking her, separating the cream for butter, and carefully storing fresh milk in clean containers.
Because of you, Ganga has found new independence and pride in her work.
Every day, she takes the milk and butter to the roadside stand to sell to passing traders or other villagers. She can now buy food and clothes for her children and even begin saving for their future. For the first time in years, there is enough.
This project is one simple but powerful way to reflect the love of God. Ganga said it best herself, “Lila is more than a cow to us. She shows me that we are seen and cared for. Thank you for this gift of life.”
Just as Ganga carefully tends to Lila each day, your generosity tends to communities in need, nurturing them to grow strong and self-sufficient. Thank you for spreading the love of God in the most tangible ways.
