Unsafe water leads to sickness and death. In India, women will walk long distances to collect water from a pond or shallow hand dug hole. This water is often contaminated by animals that also use the same water source. As a result, many of the poor are frequently sick and have a higher incidence of death due to water borne diseases. Additionally, the hours which could be used for business, agriculture, or with their children are spent collecting water.
